The general idea of the raiding force (Blue) is threatening Dunedin. It landed a covering force in the vicinity of Riverton, which has pushed inland, commanded .by LieutenantColonel Bowler. It will be opposed by troops forming the Otago military district under the command of Lieuten-ant-Colonel Smyth, commanding the Otago military district. Eight hundred and seventy-three officers and men are in camp at Mandeville. Little, Was done yesterday, the weather being wet and cold. Shortly after nine o'clock today the camp was struck at Mandeville and the troops reached Gordon Creek. After eleven o'clock precipitous country was passed through, which necessitated the heights being patrolled. The instruction thus afforded is very useful, as it is adopted' in Indian warfare. The column will be making a feature of field firing to-morrow.
