WHELCH v. FOGWELL.
Whelcli had two days' spell at the beginning of- the week but he had previously done some good solid work, doing the whole course once every taorning and a good part of it during the afternoon* He also took long, walks and othe,r exercise. Whelch says he feels in splendid fettle. He will now hare some fast work, but not too much. He expects to scale a little over lOst on the day of the race. Mr A; Cradddck will be the .umpire and Mr H. G. L. Robinson, of Akaroa, the judge. Whelch has decided not to use his now boat by Norton, as it arrived too late for him to get thoroughly used to it. He had to alter the rigger and other parts. J He will use qne of Webb's boats, . the same <ra© as he used when rowing against 0. Towns on the Parramatta. It is a splendid sea boat, 27ft long, being a foot longer . than the Norton, and wider in the beam. The town is filling fast. Both coach lines had extra coaches and buggies running from Little River on Thursday and Friday. The presence of the rowing champions has had a good effect on some of the youncer members of the Akaroa Boating Club. Thanks to the sportsmanship and generosity of Mr L; J. Van- ! gioni, who has bought . a beautiful sculling boat. from Fogwell Cthe boat that O. Towns used against Webb), C. Walker, who as a youth has. consistently rowed in local regattas, is going j in for training and will doubtless bring back the amateur championship to the club. Floyd, FogwelVs trainer, 1 has a high qninion of him. T. Clements, another good pferformer for the A.B:C, is also roing in for single sculling, having built a boat for himself, a flatbottomed one similar to the boats used for training on thes Hunter. He is also shaping well. '[..';.
