i — £^« -• \ THE PIA^O. CONTESTS. At the Choral Hall this morning the piano events on the Christchurch. Competitions Society's programme were commenced. Mr Short, tne judge, was seated in the gallery, while the competitors played on the stage. The test number in section A was tne "Presto" from Beethoven's "Sonata in F." Eight of the twelve entrants took part, and they played in the following order :— Miss Emily Richards (Ashburton), Miss Rhoda Dettmer (Lin wood), Miss Vera Moore (Dunedin), Miss Kathleen R. Levi (Dunedin), Miss Airaee Champion (Dunedin) » Master Frederick W. M'Caldon (Christchurch), ,Miss Ethel M. M'Caldon (Christchurch), and Miss Verbina East (Christchurch). Mr Short judged under the following headings: — General effect, tempo, technique and style, and his maximum was ten points under each division. The result was as follows : — Miss Vera, Moore (Dunedin), first prize; Migs Kathleen R. Levi (Dunedin), second. Mr Short's remarks on the winning performance ran: — "Good time, technique clear, touch capital, good attention to light and shade." On the second prizewinner's playing Mr Short remarked : — " Not quite correct technique, fair attention to marks.". The/next oompetitiori was. in the B section, the choice being "Prelude No. 2, Allegretto" (Bettini Ormond). There were twelve entrants, and seven played in the following order:— Miss Elsie Maud Hobbs (Sydenham), Miss Rhoda Dettmer (Linwood), Miss Vera H. Henderson (Linwood) Miss Vera M. Newman (Linwood), Miss Audrey Gibson (Sydenham), Miss Daisy A. Hooker (Christchurch), and Master Stanley Clarke (Timaru). The decision in this event will be given this evening. A piano duet contest followed. The entrants were as follow :— Miss Audrey Gibson and Miss Gertrude Eaton (Sydenham) Miss Vera Moore and Miss Kathleen R. Levi (Dunedin), Miss Levi and Miss Ahnee Champion (Dunedin) j Miss Edith M'Caldon and Master F. W M'Caldon (Christchurch), and Miss Bertha .Baker and Miss Violet Myers (Dunedin). The test number was "Pas- Charge" (Mattei). The judgment was reserved for the evening' session. A bugle contest for school Cadets, and an open event followed. There were three entrants from . the schools, as follow: W. Willers YAshburton), C. Penrose (West Christchurch), and T. Penrose (Addington). The following placed in the open class :— L. S. Webb (Sydenham), C. R. Smith (Addington), H. C. Brice (Richmond), and G. Burgess (Sydenham). The calls which the buglers played were " Fallin/' ■♦« Officers " and the "First Post" and "Last Post." The results were also reserved for the evening session. On Monday the musical monologue, for which twenty-flix entries have been received, will be commenced at nine o'clock, the soprano solo- will follow, at 11.30, and at twelve the Shakespearean recitation for men will be taken. During the afternoon a second Shakeserean recital will be commenced, and also the preliminary of the mezzosoprano solo. At the evening session the male quartets will be the first to be decided, and then will follow the finals. Mr C. A. Baeyertz will judge the competitions, and the supervisor will be Mr H. Swenav,
