The British revenue for the quarter ending December 31 amounted to £33,256,000, of which the Customs, yielded £7,636,000, excise £10,170,000, and stamps £2,060,000. ASSISTED IMMIGRATION. During 1908 the New South Wales Government granted 8090 assisted passages. . SOUTH AFRICA'S MEAT SUPPLIES. CAPE TOWN, January 1. A Chicago firm proposes to close its Cape Town branch, in consequence of South Africa being now in a position to supply her own meat supplies. PUBLIC TRUSTEES. w LONDON* January 1. Twenty million, sterling, mostly under wills, was entrusted to the control of the Publio Trustee during the first year the office was in existence. THE PAPAROA. The Paparoa, which put back to St Vincent on account of an outbreak of fire in No. 3 hold, has been surveyed, and, being found seaworthy, has sailed for London. SWITZERLAND AND FROZEN ? atEAT Mr A. T. Coghlan, Agent-General for New South Wales, has aeked the Foreign office to request Switzerland to remove the restrictions against, the importation of frozen meat. A Swiss syndicate proposes to erect a depot, and a large business in Australasian meat is probable if the restrictions are withdrawn.
