PUBLIC OPINION.

FROM YESTERDAY'S NEWS- " PAPERS. (By Telegraph.) ; EDUCATION ACT AMENDMENT BILL. . v We wish to join with those ''who warmly congratulate the Minister of Education on the introduction of a measure which, if it becomes law;, will do more to further the cause of educational progress in this dominion than any Reform introduced by his predecessors in office. — Dunedin "Star." THE SUPPLY OF LABOUR. The Canterbury Trades end Labour Council is unnecessarily alarming itself if >. it contemplates a great rush of immigrants to this country and a glutted labour market. Its letter of warning to the British worker was by no means necessary, and, despite its contents, it is possible to believe that there is plenty of room in New Zealand for immigrants of the right description. — " Otago Daily Times." LABOUR MATTERS. The man who feels his billet safe as long as he performs mechanically his allotted duties,, gives no "valid reason for dismissal " in the form of positive offence, yet committs continually, under shelter of his tradition of employment the neg-itive offence of failing to reach the height of efficiency of which he is capable, or the height of efficiency which his service demands, and is a bad man to encourage in this or any community.— " Evening Post." NORTH ISLAND RAILWAY. The line would certaintly have been made, sooner if the whole railway expenditure had been .concentrated upon it, but in that case the Government w.ould not have made 2300 mileg of railway, on the even-handed system, in other words, they could not have remained in office. They resisted the pressure, .and. they are where they are to-day in consequence. We repeat that, they were the only Government ever, in earnest about the line, and it is due to their acceleration of the rate of construction all round, a rate denounced as wildly extravagant by their opponents, that the line is now prac-' tically finished. — "New Zealand times." ____________
