CHRISTCHURCH. I Thtthsday, August 6. (Before Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M.) Drunkenness. — QVq first offenders, 1 one a woman,, were each fined 5s and costs, in default twenty-four hours' iin^ prisonment, for having been drunk. — Richard M'Pherson, a statutory second offender, was fined 10s and costs, in default forty-eight hours' imprisonment, for a similar offence. ■ A Double Charge. — William O'Con- '■ nor (Mr Donnelly), a young man, appeared in answer to a charge of having used obscene language in a. public place on June 22, 1907. He was also charged with having thrown stones. i The second offence he admitted, and I was fined 20s and costs, in default fourteen days' imprisonment. He denied having used the obscene language, and the police withdrew the charge. According to Mr Donnelly the. accused was with a party of young men, who drove in a cart past a house in Shirley and threw" stones at the building. The woman who occupied the house was badly frightened, and when she ran out bad language was used to her, but she could net tell who was, the offender. The other men had been dealt with, but O'Connor had left the district, and had only been arrested in Dunedin two days ago. ! Theft. — Ernest Sargetat, a young man, admitted having stolen a purse, containing' £7 in money and a cheque for £7 7s 9d, from William Woolley on May 11. Chief -Detective Bishop said that Woolley had given the accused shelter and "food in April, but on May 11 Sargent, who was still living with Woolley, took the purse and fled the district. Accused was sentenced to six months' imprisonment. His police record was not good. Judgment by Default. — In each of the following cases judgment with costs was entered for the plaintiff by default':—J. Phillips (Mr, Rowe) v. A. Simpson, £1 15s 7d;. N.. Jale (Mr Rowe) v. R. Dempsey, £6 ; William Philpott and Sons v. W. Hart, £3 17s 7d ; Arthur Macdonajd v. William Halliday, £23 ; F: D. Kesteven (Mr Lea- ! them) v. D. J. Connelius, £25. I Judgment Summons Cask. — In th** case C. Pannell and Co. v. H. H. Wilson, the judgment creditor asked for an order against the debtor on an unsatisfied judgment for £2 19s lid. Wilson did not appear, and he was ordered to pay the amount, in default seven days' imprisonment. ! Judgment foe Plaintiff. — Bell Bros. (Mr Weston) obtained judgment against G. Fraser for £4, due owing to certain amounts having been erroneously credited to the defendant on the plaintiffs' books. : An Inefficient Volunteer. — C. H. Hewlett, captain of the Christ's Colleee Rifles (Mr Wright) claimed £1 19s 6d from Richard Lloyd Lees, as capitation, subscriptions and fines due on the Volunteer regulations. The defendant was shown to have failed to atr tend the correct number of parades and to have been an inefficient Volunteer. i Judgment was for the plaintiff. ' !
