OBITUARY.

MR ADAM CHALMERS. Mr Adam Chalmers, who died on August 5 at Lyttelton, aged, seventyfive years, had been identified with the public affairs of Lyttelton for manj years. He was a member of the firsi Borough. Council, to which he was elected on January 20, 1868, and was mayoi for the years 1873, 1874; 1885, 1886 1897 and 1898, He served on th< Charitable Aid, Hospital and Harboui Boards, and was a member of the ole nominated Hospital Board. Until advancing age caused his retirement frorr public life, Mr Chalmers held the position of Justice of the Peace. He was born in 1833, in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, where he was trained as a farmer : but afterwards became a quarryman, In 1859 lie arrived in Lyttelton in the ship Victory, and had resided in Lyttelton ever since. He engaged it contracting and flaxmilling, but since the great fire in Lyttelton, he was engaged in dairy farming, a business which, since his retirement was carried on by his grandson. He was for some years chairman of the Lyttelton Gas Company. Mr Chalmers was married in the Old Country in 1854, and leaves a widow and one son, who ie farming in Canterbury. In his later years Mr Chalmers interested himself in literary pursuits, and was the author of a volume of verse, entitled " Withered. Leaves."
