The Broken River correspondent of the " Lyttelton Times 3 ' reports that during the past week or ten days over one hundred men have arrived at Broken River for work on the Midland Railway. Thej' ;vero not expected, and -their arrival taxed the resources of the Public Works Department and the local stores in the provision of food and shelter. Tho men are given temporary accommodation for the fir3t few days, while they pitch camp and arrango for stores. The '.ocal storekeepers, Messrs J. Hoglund and T. Nimmo, are giving the men one month's credit for food and the Public Works Department is supplying tente. Most of the men are satisfied to remain, a few only having decided to return to Ckristchurch. It is expected that work will be found for a large number during this mouth. So far as careful tillage is concerned Japan is in an advanced state of agriculture.
