The brigantine Aratapu, which arrived at Wellington from Kaipara on Tuesday, is to land part cargo of timber there, and then >ome to Lyttelton, where she will discharge the remainder, about 40,000 feet. The United States and Australasian s.s. Janeta, from New York, arrived at Melbourne on Sunday last. She is to come to New Zealand, via Sydney, and will make Auckland her first port in the dominion. Mr J. G. Watson, late chief officer of tha ».s. Pateena, has joined the s.s. Koromiko in _ similar capacity. The New Zealand Shipping Co.'s s.s. Waijnate, due at Port Chalmers about July 25, has about 8000 tons of cargo, of which 4000 tons are for Port Chalmers, 3000 tons for Timaru, and 1000 tons for Lyttelton. The Union Steamship Co.'s chartered s.b. Kavarino, which arrived at Wellington from Newcastle this morning, has part cargo of aoal for Lyttelton, and may be expected hers toext week. The departure of the Union Steamship Co.'s s.s. Kotuku for Greymouth has been postponed till to-morrow (Friday) afternoon. The Union Steamship Co.'s s.s. Pukaki is lo leave Greymouth this evening with a cargo ef coal for Lyttelton. The Union Steamship Co.'s chartered s.s. Otterburn is to leave Lyttelton to-morrow (Friday) afternoon for Sydney, via Picton. She will take 1000 sacks of barley for New South Wales from this port, and will load soma jnore at Picton. After discharge at Sydney *he will go to Newcastle to load coal for Nev* Zealand. A return in regard to shipping at New*a_tie, comparing the first six months of 1908 )wid 1907, has just been issued. It shows jhat 2535 vessels arrived and 2558 vessels- left the port from January 1 to June 30 this year, as against 2477 arrived and 2443 left for the game period in 1907. Japanese steamers (says an exchange) are Still acutely feeling the effects of the Chinese boycott, ar.d, judging by the thorough manner in which it is being applied to representatives of the Japanese lines trading to Australia, the end is as far off as ever. The Yawata, Maru, which arrived at Melbourne from Yokohama and Hongkong, via ports, recently, was again a great sufferer. Sho did not carry a solitary Chinese passenger or -* ton of Chinese csfrgo from Hongkong. She was, however, freely patronised by European, and Japanese, arriving in Sydney with her saloon accommodation well taken up.
