DUNEDIN WINTER SHOW

[From Ocr Correspondent.] DUNEDIN, June 3. • Glorious weather again prevailed today for the Winter Show, .and, aided by a general holiday and the incoming of train loads of country residents, the building was thronged throughout the afternoon and evening with interested visitors. The meagre display of fat cattle is one of the disappointments of the exhibition, only five animals being entered for competition. Of the four bullocks in the any age claw, the judges showed preference for a big-framed and well-furnished and finished animal ex- j hibited by Mr, A. J. Keith, of Ashbur- ' ton, Messrs W. B. Clarkson and Sons' great pair from Riccartmi being placed second and third. Mr R. Shennan, of . Berwick, showed a good heifer, and secured a first award. The fat sheep made a capital display, the number being large, and the exhibits in prime condition. Mr A. W. Rutherford, of Cheviot, was the only exhibitor of three merino wethers, his trio being splendid specimens that j would have been hard to beat in a full i competition, and worthy of the • first prize awarded them. The half-dozen pens of three half-br«>d wethers bred from merino ewes created a deadlock. Mr j Rutherford is represented by two. the Land Company's Hakataramea Estate | Company and Mr J. Ross (Palmerston) and Mr 'J. Tough (Milton) by one each. The judges hung over these pens for a considerable time, finally quitting their task without making an award. It then became known that they were not satisfied that some of the exhibits were from merino ewes, and that they had postponed their decision until next morning in order to interview the owners on the subject. The three pens of three Down or cross-ibxed Dowu wethers were a good lot, and Mr , Toup.h, of Milton, secured the first and j second awards, his first prize pen also taking the championship prize for j wethers. The same owner also came out ; fiist and second in a good competition for three long-wool or cross-bred longwool wethers. There were nine entries in the class for three sheep suitable for | the frozen meat trade, live weight not , to exceed 1301 b. Mr James Patrick ' (Outram) secured the first prize, and Mr W. Souter (Flag Swamp) the second in a keen comr*etition. Mr J. "Kirkland, of Middlemarch, won the first prizes in the two classes for j three wethers under twenty-two months, Mr Patrick being second in Downs or the Down cross, and Mr "W. Farquharson (Lovell's Flat), second in longwools. With a fine pen of three 1 cross-bred Down hoggets Mr Tough captured the first award and the chami pionship for hoggets, Mr Moynihan furnishing the second pen. There were ci r ht pens of. three cross-bred longwool hoggets, the lot being of a high order. Mr Farquharson claimed the winning and second pens. The class ! for three hoggets, any weight or breed, shown by farmers not holding more j j than 250 acres, had five entrants, and I of these the leader was Mr G. Clark, of Pine Bush, Mr Tough being second. 1 Mr J. Ross was the only exhibitor of i three pnre-bred longwool hoggets, and i Mr Patrick occupied a like lonely posi- : tion in regard to pure-bred Down hog- ' gets, both getting first prizes.
