INTERESTING GIFT TO QUEEN ALEXANDRA.
Not the least important passenger by the Canadian Pacific liner Empress of Ireland on her last voyage from Canada was a remarkably fin© specimen of the Chinese chow d<3g, which is a gift from King Edward's equerry (Colonel Sir Henry. Knollys) to Queen Alexandra. In order to acquire the dog Captain M. A. Hamer, of the 129 th Baluchis (Indian Army), undertook, on behalf of the donor, a journey of 12,000 miles. Connected with the Indian frontier forces, Captain Hamer went from the Afghanistan hill station with which he was associated into the Chinese Empire, and was there suoessful in obtaining a beautiful specimen of the chow dog, which in build and style of coat, excepting the colour, which is a light brown, somewhat resembles the popular Pomeranian. Having acquired the dog, Captain Hamer continued his journey to- Vancouver, and thence to Montreal, where he embarked on the Empress of Ireland. Naturally the captain manifested the greatest interest in and oare for his valuable charge.
