PERSONAL NOTES FROM LONDON.

Mr Gerrit van Asch, formerly principal of the Deaf and Dumb Institute at Sumner, Christchurch, who died in London this week, was buried on March 5 at Highgate Cemetery. Amongst the vice-presidents who have recently joined the Imperial Colonial Club are Lord and Lady Plunket (New Zealand), Lord and Lady Avebury, Kaid Sir Harry Maclean, who is ako a member of the conference committee, Sir Lambert Ormsby, a New Zealander and ex-president of the Irish College of Physicians, Lord Lamington, ex-Governor of Queensland, Australia, and Bombay, India, Sir Frances Corbett, X.C.V.0., late financial adviser to the Egyptian Government (life founder of the club), the Right Rev Bishop Frodsham (North Queensland) and Major-General Sir Alfred Turner. Mr O. J. Fulton, chief fibre expert, and Mr R. H. Cooper, of the High Commissioner's Department, have just returned to London from a fortnight's tour through Franoe, Germany, Holland and Belgium in connection with the New Zealand hemp industry. The New Zealand Rhodes scholar Colin Gilray who is now studying, at University College, Oxford, was among the competitors in the 'Varsity sports last Monday. Ho took part in. the long jump only, and put up a very fair performance, clearing 20ft Sin. This, however, was only good enough to give him third place to Bleaden, of Brasenoae, who jumped 21ft, lOjin, and Cresswoll, of Pembroke, whose best leap was 21ft 3Jin. Gilray found some consolation on the morrow for hi 6 defeat in the 'Varsity long jump, for he carried off a couple of events at his own collogo sports. Penalised 18in, he won the long jump, though he only cleared 19ft lOin, and he also won the 120 yds hurdles after a tough tussle with N. Ho will be accompanied by his wife and three children. A fine now boat for the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand has just been launched at Port Glasgow. The Waitemnta, as she has boen namod, is Rome 43OFt in length, is capable of carrying about 8500 tons deadweight, and is destined to be employed in tho trade between Fiji and Calcutta. She will possess all tho latest appliances for the rapid handling of cargo. Tho Shaw, Savill liner lonic left London to-day for New Zealand, via Cape Town and Hobart.
