SUMNER LIGHTING.

THE COUNCIL'S PROJECT. The Sumner Borough Council has for some time had under consideration the question of supplying a lighting system for the- .borough, and at last evening s meeting a letter was read from the Lyttelton Council, stating that it was now in a position to further discuss the question of supplying Sumner with gas, having satisfied itself as .to the probable amount of capital outlay required by it in erecting a compressing plant and putting down mains. The proposal is to supply Sumner with gas in bulk, putting the gas in a holder at Sumner. The contract proposed by -Lyttelton is to be for fifteen years, the Sumner Council guaranteeing during the period a minimum supply of two million cubic feet per annum. The price proposed is on the following eliding scale:— Two million feet and up to three million feet, 5s per thousand cubic feet; over three million and up to four million, 4s 9d per thousand; over four million and up to five million, 4s 6d per thousand ; over five million, 4s 3d per thousand. Upon inquiry, the Lyttelton Council stated, it had found that Upper Hutt was supplied by Petone borough, and ; took six million cubic feet per annum ( at 6s per thousand. Hutt had spent j £8000 on capital account in its own district. The Lyttelton Council's esti- j mate was that Sumner would require to ; spend between £4000 and £5000 on capital account in erecting a holder and ; putting down mains. } The matter was referred to the Lighting Committee.
