CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
The monthly meeting of the commit•tee of the Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday afternoon, Mr A. Kaye (president) in the chair. The president reported that the conference of Chambers of Commerce in the South Island had been held at Oamaru on March 17 to discuss the question of the size of cornsacks, Mr Horrell and he attending as delegates. After discussion it had been unanimously resolved to adopt the size of 46in f by 24£ in for cornsacks as being the most suitable. A meeting of importers of sacks had since been held in Christchurch, and it had been decided to have tests of the different sizes made as to their holding capacity for flour and grain, the results to be reported at a meeting to be held on May 22. The Wellington Chamber wrote asking for support in making representations to the Government with a view of retaining the representation of Chambers of Commerce on Harbour Boards. It was decided to cordially support the action. The Wellington Chamber also wrote expressing regret that it was proposed to take action at the Telegraph Conference to be held in Lisbon in June to restrict the present facilities for coding telegrams, and asking co-operation in urging the Postmaster-General bo oppose any interference with existing arrangements. It was agreed to support the action. . The Taranaki Chamber forwarded a resolution drawing attention to the filthy state of bank notes in circulation, and asking that members of "Parliament should be urged to approach the Government with a view of compelling banks to issue clean notes. The committee supported the resolution. The Auckland Chamber forwarded a
resolution passed with reference to Mr Larke's visit to that city, and a similar resolution, concurring with the views as to the advantages of reciprocal trade with Canada, was agreed to. The Premier wrote at length in reply to the deputation which waited on him with 1 f eference to the examination of passengers' luggage at Chf istchurch instead of Lyttelton, pointing out the difficulties in the way of a change. The letter was received^ The Kaikoura County Council wrote asking the Chamber to act as head of a Railway League for the furtherance of the completion of the South Island East Coast railway. It was decided to reply that the committee favoured the scheme, but the matter would ho further considered at the next quarterly meeting. ■ ■■ , The" president reported that the Pro : duce Sectional Committee had met and fixed the standard samples of grain for the current season.
