The only point precluding a settle* ment yesterday night was in connection with the Merchant Service Guild. This was arranged $o-day, when an agreement was signed and. ratified by both parties. The coastal steamers i will resume Tunning forthwith. The settlement provides that the coastal companies shall carry out all agreements with the men taken on during the strike, those formerly employed to return as opportunity offers. The Newcastle Company is to- have the right tc retain its present employees at "Newcastle and Morpeth provided that coasfc- ! al rates are paid in lien of » weeklj wage, preference to unionists to operate after the present employees have joined the Union or left the company's employ. The engineers agree that the coastal owners may man at their own discretion not more than six steamers, distributed between three fleets, witt engineers not exceeding twelve in number. The remainder of the steamers are to be manned solely by members of the Institute of Marine Engineers, who ! are also to have preference for all future vacancies. None but present engineers and employees are to be retain- i ed after the termination of the present agreements. The Merchant Services Guild stipulated that all steamers now out of commission shall be manned by members of the Guild, who are also to fill vacancies as they occur.
