Among the Malay washerwomen at the Cape the mode of washing clothes is peculiar, and often, disastrous to the clothes ; for, instead of using a tub and brush, they take the clothes to the riverside, and, laying an article of clothing upon a stone, they rub and pound the article until it is clean. Sometimes they use a pine cone in lieu of a scrubbing brush, and one can, imagine what effect a rough, hard pinecone will have on linen. After the: operation the clothes are spread in the sun to bleach, when they again go through the pounding operation, and finally are dried, tied up in huge bundles, and the women can then be seen carrying the bundles on their heads to their home, where the clothes are sorted out for their respective customers. At the week-end the hueband. and two or three of his wives take home the washing in a Cape cartj and very picturesque they look in ttair multi-col-oured garme&ta.
