DUKE OF DEVONSHIRE. United Press Association — By Electrio Telegraph — Copyright. (Received March 25, 8.30 a.m.) LONDON, March 24. The death, is announced at Cannes, of heart failure, of th© Duke of Devonshire. (Spencer Compton Cavendish was the eighth Duke of Devonshire, and wa6 born on July 23, 1833. He became a Lord of the Admiralty ,in l(1 18j53, and was Secretary of State for War in 1866, Postmaster-General from 1868 to 1871 ; Chief Secretary for Ireland from 1871 to 1874; Secretary of State for India from 1880 to 1882; and again War Secretary from 1882 to 1885. He wa6 in the House of Commons before he became a peer, in succession to his father, representing Lancashire constituencies, and was Lord Rector of Glasgow University in 1877. He will be succeeded by his nephew, the Right Hon Victor C. W. Cavendish.)
