FIRES.
[Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, March 24. A gumstore at Mangawai, owned by Mr D. Bowen, was destroyed by fire. The damage is about £1000 to £1200. The building was insured for £150 in the Guardian Office and the gum for £500 in another office. About four o'clock this morning the . Fire Brigades received an alarm by the t blowing of a whistle at the railway, and almost simultaneously from boxes in ' the city at the Clock Tower, Hereford . Street,' Cashel Street Bridge, Caversham Hotel, Coker's Hotel and Prince of Wales Hotel. There was a big glare in the direction of Sydenham, accentuated by the low-lying clouds, but when the Lichfield Street and Sj-denham chemical engines arrived at the spot the fire was found to be in an ©Jd unoccupied four-roomed house in. Wordsworth Street. It was completely gutted, bjit the fire was extinguished with hose from the Sydenham high-pressure mains. The house, which was owned by Mr F. Ditford, had been vacated a day before by the tenants. It was insured for £80 in the Atlas Office.
