Owing to the misunderstanding of an order, the French submarine Ventors, when manoeuvring at Cherbourg, suddenly plunged, and struck the rocks at a depth of ten fathoms. The hull was extensively damaged, and the propeller Tendered useless. The coolness displayed by the captain and crew enabled them to make a miraculous escape.
