OTAGO v. CANTERBURY.

Good cricketing weather favoured the commencement of the annual mterprovincial match between Otago and L-an-terhury, at Lancaster Park, to-day, a - thoughthe light was somewhat dull. The match did not partake ot the importance of last week's contest with Auckland forth© Plunket Shield, but it had a compensative interest in a oomparißon with the form of the previous contest. The teams were supposed *o be evenly, matched, and a close contest was looked for. The fleams were -^ follow: — . Otago-U. H. Fisher, A. Downey H. Siedeberg, G. G. Auetiix^Mackersey, R. TorraAce, C. G. Wrisok ipaptaxn). A. Adams, H. Watson, A. Eckhold and F. Williams. Canterbury — E. Ackroyd, A. Anthony, J. H. Bennett, C. Boxsh&ll, IL. E Crawshaw, C. A. duff, H. B. Lusk, H. Moorhouse, W. Patrick, S. A. Orchard and D. lleese (captain). / THE PLAY. Canterbury winning the toss, Lusk and Patrick, the redoutable first innings combination of the previous interprovincial contest, opened 1 for Canterbury to the bowling of Fisher and Downes. Singles came off the first two overs, 1 but three maidens followed, tne batsmen playing carefully. A total ot 10 was reached in twenty, minutes play, with four for>byeS twice in. succession. Fisher appeared to be troublesome, but Patrick got Downes to leg and through the sh*s for two .each time. Singles brought 20 up for thirty minutes' play, and the batsmen then commenced to hit more vigorously. Lusk, however, touched one horn Downes into the wicket-keeper s hands, after making eight singles.' 26— *—»• Ackroyd joined Patrick, who^got into double figures with a nice leg stroke -or three off Fisher. Ackroyd drove ona from Downes which hit the opposite Vicket. It was returned smartly before he could get back ik> his crease, and. tlie board read 27-2-0. Reese partnered Patrick, who got a boundary past point, and four from an overthrow^ on. the following ball. He was then ©aught ott Downes at the wicket. 6b— 6—l^ Moorhouse took his place, and got Downes to the boundary through the slips, bringing 40 -up. He also got Fisher to leg for three, being inclined to hit vigorously, and brought 50 on the board with a single in the slips, following this up with a pretty cut ott Downes for three. He got four for an overthrow off the same bowler, # while Reese brought 60 up with two in the slips, and. pulled Fisher for a single, reaching his own double figures. Moorhouse got two from a very hot clrance to Downes at point off -Fisher. He timed the hall well, and hit freely at everything. Austin replaced *isner at the" pavilion end, and Reese lifted him for a single, while Moorhouse put him for tour. Reese brought his twenty up witir a well-placed boundary past, point. He -was batting in his usual attractive- style,"although carefully, wMe Moorhouee, although attractive, did not appear w> \>3> as safe. With the score at 84 Torranrfe relieved Downes, giving Moorhouse Eome trouble, an,d Doivnes replaced Austin, sending down a maiden. Watson then took the ball from Torrance, but Moorhouse lifted him to square-leg for four, and at the luncheon adjournment the partnership was not dissolved, the score being 99. On resuming Fisher took up the bowling in place of Downes, at the pavilion end, and Moorhouse, after surviving an appeal for a catch behind, brought 100 up with a single to the on, and got Downes to the boundary, -the bowler having replaced Watson. He 'was then clean bowled by Downes. He had batted' forcefully 'and attractively for 4.2. 104. — 4 — 42. Orchard was sixth man in. and on his arrival Reese placed Fisher to square leg for three. Orchard lifted Downes to deep field for two, and Reese cut Fisher for foiir. bringing bis thirty up. He drove Downes to the on. for four, and Orchard got Fisher over point to the boundary.
