PRIZE DISTRIBUTIONS.

CHRISTCHURCH SHORTHAND AND COMMERCIAL SCHOOL. The break-up and prize-giving ceremony of the Christohurch Shorthand and Commercial School took place lasc evening, when there was a very larp 'attendance at the Alexandra Hall. Hi© pleasantness of the evening -was assured by the fact; that, the business proper was merely an incident in an excellent prowifamme of entertainment by the pupTte. Instrumental solos, songs and fianoes were contributed, and went to form a very pleasing whole. Mr 1. 11Pavey, M.P., distributed the prizes. The annual report presented during the evening stated that the year had been in many respects the most successful the school had ever experienced. The number of students on the roll showed a considerable increase over that for any previous year, and a keen and growing demand for students for office appointments had existed throughout the year. With regard to the various examinations and competitions held during the past twelve months, students** and teachers alike had every reason to- be proud of the successes obtained. Special mention was made of the manner in which students had distinguished themselves in the competitions in typewriting, shorthand and commercial correspondence conducted by the home industries' section of the Exhibition, the great bulk of the awards made going to students of the school, in competition with hundreds of other candidates. The gold medal for shorthand annually awarded by vthe Christchurch Shorthand Writers' Association, to students obtaining the highest shorthand speed certificate granted by Sir Isaac Pitman and Sons during the year, had, for the fifth year in succession, been won by one of the school's pupils. Seventy-seven speed and theory certificates had been, granted by Sir Isaac Pitman and Sons as the result of the work of the past twelve months, and in addition there were the examination papers of sixty candidates, the results of which had not been received. The thanks of the school were due to Mr Charles Bean for his generosity in presenting medals for competitions in typewriting amongst students for competitors using Remington machines.
