AN AUCKLAND TRAGEDY.
♦ A PITIABLE CASE. [Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, December 20. At the inquest on the headless infant, Detective Denorvalle stated .that when he questioned Mrs Farndale, the woman ! arrested on a murder charge, she stated that the infant was in the Salvation i Army Home. He conveyed her there in a cab and on arrival she admitted that the child was not there, and added, " I took baby away at dusk on Tuesday and went for a blow up the harbour on a ferry boat. Baby was restless. I walked up and down, then set it on the side Tail of the steamer which lurched, and baby fell overboard." She added that she was too scared to tell anyone on the steamer or at the board-ing-house. She expressed regret that she had told so many lies. She sobbed violently while making this statement.
