It is currently reported in the Roxburgh district that < the Government intends to throw open the Ormaglade run, which falls in next year, in the interests of closer settlement, and with that object steps are also to be taken to acquire the homestead block, which contains some really choice land. There is a further report current that in the same neighbourhood the owner of a large freehold has decided to cut it up shortly into suitable-sized, areas for sale on easy conditions. Light rain has fallen in Dimedin throughout to-day. From Central Dtago comes the welcome news that :ain commenced . on Wednesday mornng sand continued incessantly till this the register showing that lp till noon three-quarters of an inch lad fallen. Old residents of Alexandra leclare that it is the heaviest fall since the 1878 flood. The executive of the Council of Dhurches highly approves of the provisions. of the recent . Gaming Act and ippreciates the good results already ittained, which are undoubtedly in the' moral interests of the people, but (regrets that a legal status . has been yiven to bookmakers, and that the, totalisator is allowed to remain a legal instrument of gambling.
