TRADES AND LABOUR COUNCIL.

Ready; wrote inviting tue Council to appoint representatives to "mett the Aesyciation and discuss the attitude of the Church to labour problems. The letter was received. Trie Chamber of Commerce wrote requesting the Council's support in urging tlie comp.eiion of the Midland Railway. It was decided that the Council should give its help. The Hon J. A. Millar, Minister oi Labour, wrote stating, in rtply to the Council's communication asking for an ameudment to the Scaffdding Inspection Act, that an amendment to the Act was being drafted. Letters wen received from the Master Printers' Association and the. Typographical Union regarding the increased duty on printing materials, and it Mas agreed that copies of the letters should be cent to the Minister 'of Cutstoms. Correspondence was received from the Spiral Seed Pipe Company requesting the support of the Council in an endeavour tc obtain an increasj of duty on imported articles which, come into competition with the company's manufactures. A special committee was appcinted to go into the matter, comprising Messrs Thorn, Shaw, l'aulkner, Hart and Forde! The secretary was instructed to send letters of thanks U the tailoring trade and the Tanners' Union for donations to the Farm La- . bourers' fighting fund. The following , motion was passed: —"That this Couni cil takee the earliest opportunity tc , deny the statements made by Sii Joseph VVard in the House of Representatives regarding 1 the apr-ointmeni of the Hon John Barr, M.L.C., anc ' absolutely denies that he was recom ! mended by tho Canterbury Trad s anr Labour Council, and a'so that he wa?
