President Roosevelt, at a banquet given by the National Convention for the Extension of Foreign Commerce, endorsed the amended Ship Subsidy Bill, which has now a prospect of passing. It is modelled on the lines of the Cunard Company's contract with the British Government, and proposes; to devote £400,000 annually 'to the building of twenty fast steamers for the South American trade, and half that amount to the building of sixteen steamers for the Pacific trade. - . The Bill also provides for a naval reserve. Senator Cannon, who opposed the previous Bill, has promised to support the amended measure. President Roosevelt urges the construction of two battleships of the Dreadnought type.
