THE MARSHALL ISLANDS.
MESSRS BURN, PHILP AND CO.'S
CLAIM
United Press Association— By Electric Telegraph— Copyright. (Received November 16, 9.7 a.m.) LONDON, November 15. Germany's final reply to Messrs Burn, Philp and -Co. 's claim respecting the treatment accorded to their vessel at the Marshall Islands has not been received. (The . Marshall Islands have been German since 1885, and the Jaluit Company of Hamburg administers the group under an agreement with the German Government. Last year the company made trading regulations of so drastic a character that Australian trading vessels were virtually excluded from the islands, and Messrs Burn, Philp and Co. suffered great loss in consequence. The law officers of the Crown having reported favourably, the Colonial Office ha© approved of Messrs Burn, Philp and Co.'s amended claim of £12,752 for loss of trade with the Marshall Islands, and the claim was transmitted in March last to Sir Edward Grey, for presentation to Germany. In October of last year a mea- . sure of relief was given to the Australian traders by the putting in force |of improved trade regulations, after the British Government had been appealed to and had intervened. The administration of the group was taken over by the German Government on April 1 la6t.)
