THE CANAL.
YESTERDAY'^ DISCUSSION. PUBLIC OPINION. ' There is a general opinion in Christchurch that the Harbour Board, in deciding to obtain expert information in regard to Mr Cyrus Williams's canal schemes, has taken the proper course, and it is now hoped that the question of feasibility will be set at rest, and that there will be a definite pronouncement. The reports, of yesterday's discussion were read widely to-d&y. Several prominelnt citizens, in conversation with a reporter, said they thought that Mr Waymouth- had' hit the nail on the head when he said that Canterbury should have faith in itself. As far as Christchurch isi concerned, the idea, at any rate, meets with approval, although, of course, there is no decided expression of opinion in regard to th€ feasibility of Mr Williams's proposals. It Is felt that the Board has taken an important step, which cannot fair tc be satisfactory one way or the^other, as it will tend to put a stop to th« conjectures and constant agitation 61 the publio mind that are eyperienceq , at pi'eejrS*? -- — — • '
