M ACCIDENT.

NARROW ESCAPE OF PAS-

SENGERS.

The increased speed was maintained until St Aisaph Street was reached, but here a stoppage occurred, aris an accident was ..the result. The, fifth car overshot, the mark slightly, and bumped the car immediately in front, the shock being sufficient to disturb the passengers in their seats, but : it was che sixth car that caused the damage After slowing ten yards away from the fifth car, the sixth seemed unable to stop, and the four passengers on the rear platform of the .fifth car saw the other coming into them. There was a crash as the two cars met, the iron fenders on either end were crumpled up like mfttohwood, and the platform of the fifth car caved in before the other, glass crashing and woodwork breaking before the onslaught. Of; tfre four passengers who were' at, the rear of the fifth oar, two apparently jumped clear, but the remaining two had no time to move before they were pinned against the wall by the wreckage which surrounded them. One of them escaped with a torn coat and a bruised log, but the other, Mr Gillies, Inspector of Police, was less fortunate. A piece of wood struck him on the nose, inflicting a wound which bled severely, and his right leg was badly bruised and sprained below tho knee. Drs Jennings and Fox were quickly ort the scene, anH were able to attend to Mr Gillies, who was subsequently removed to his home in the ambulance. Fortunately, no other passengers were injured, but many of the ladies received a shock which brought their pleasure in the function to an end. The sixth car was crowded, many passengers standing in the front section, and their ©scape was little short of miraculous. Tho two portions of the cars which wero in contact presented a battered appearance, a,nd were soon surrounded by an eager crowd, who discussed the accident excitedly! Tho injured cars were removed, and the last of the series, a double-decker, was ablo to proceed to Papanui.
