Oscar Larsen, the only survivor of the* wreck, states that the Brierholme was driven ashore at midnight on November 5. The night was very dark, and the iippact with the shore^ caused the dynamite, of which there 'was a large quantity aboard, to explode. The captain, who with' most of the others was below at the time, was blown up, aud two of the masts were blown out. The heavy sea quickly completed the destruction of the vessel. Seven of the crew too£ refuge in the foremast rigging, but before daylight the mast was carried away, Larsen and another sailor being the only two left. Larsen got ashore on a plank, but the other was drowned in the attempt. Larsen sustained life by the food cast ashore from the wreck. He wandered long distances along the coast and tried to build a boat or raft, but failed. He sighted several vessels, and once was in proximity o. the search party, out they all failed to notice his signals.
