The Union Steamship Company's new turbine steamer Loongana, in her trial trip, attained a speed of twenty knots. (Speaking at Dunedin, recently, Mr James Mills, Managing Director of the Union Company, is reported to have said that New Zealafldera will have an opportunity of making acquaintance -with tr*& turbine steamer in about twelve months, as the Union Company has let a. contract for the building of a steamer for the intercolonial trade, to be propelled by the new method. She is to bo of th* Manuka type, but larger and faster. The Manuka s gross tonnage is 4500, and her contract speed at sea, (loaded) is 14£ knots, for which, she requires to use- from 4000 to 5000 horse-power. The new ship is somewhat larger, and is intended to maintain sixteen knots loaded, for which, she will ordinarily require something over 6000 horse-power; of oourse, she will be capable of steaming seventeen when in ordinary light condition. To secure this extra 12 per cent speed in the new steamer, she requires fully 50 per cent more power.) (Received August 29, 9.17 a.m.) THE LATE WILSON BARRETT.
