FIRES.
(, [Per Phess Association*.] GERALDINE, July 14. A fine broke out in the Crown Hotel, Geraldine, at njne o'clock this morning. Tho fire originated in the nursery ia the back of the building upstairs, through the children .striking matches. The blaze was noticed by the mother in the adjoining room, who rushed into the nursery, saving th*' lives of the four children, who had nothing on but their nightdresses. All the other occupants were downstairs, except one boarder, who escaped partly -dressad by way of the stains. The Fire Brigade was promptly on the scene with two hose reels, and with the valuable aid of the new high-pressure water system soon had the fire in hand. The building is of wood and very old, but the walls, being of lath and plaster, and there being no wind, the fire was confined to the nursery and two or three small bedrooms. The bulk of the furniture and stock from the front of the building was removed by onlookers. The building was insured for £500 in the Royal" office, and the furniture and stock in the Standard office for £500. The property is owned by Mrs Mulherh, who is also the About £100 would cover the damage.
