The "Times" states that Lord Curzon, the returned Viceroy of India, will be installed as Warden of the Cinque Ports a,t Waliner Castle. (The Cinque ports, on the south coast of England, were originally five in number, hence 'their name. They originally comprised Dover, Hastings, Hythe, Romney"and Sandwich, Winchelsea and Rye being afterwards added. Their jurisdiction* was Tested in barons, called wardens. These ports, instituted by Saxon monarchs, i wero constituted by William the First, who i required them to supply ships to defend ; the coast. Nearly all the harbours, except Dover, have been destroyed by the action of the sea. The peculiar jurisdiction of the barons was abolished in 1855. Among the distinguished wardens of mo- ! dern times are found the names of the Duke of Wellington, the Marquis of Dal- I Miousie, Lord Palmerston, Earl Granville, I 'Mr W. H. Smith, the Marqui^ of Dufferm and Ava and Lord Salisbury.) I
