THE WAR.
After all, the war in the Far East has. been marked
by a Russian naval success. True, the success was an inconsiderable one, but in view of the fact that it is the only one of which the Russians are able to boast it is no doubt being appreciated at St Petersburg at something more tham its real value. After all, it is no very wonderful feat for three powerful cruisers to sink a few practically unarmed) transports. The importance of the achievement does not lie in. its result, <bufc in the aspect of naval warfare which it discloses. Evidently raiding can, be made the important factor in naval operations that the text-books had led us to. believe. In spite of the fact that the Japanese practically dominate the sea in | overwhelming force^ the three Russian cruisers not only escaped from Vladivostock, but returned there after defying all efforts to intercept them. Meanwhile, the Japanese transport system is being menaced 1 | by an unsuspected danger.
