"PARADISE LOST."
The MSS. of part of Milton's " Paradise Lost- " the sale of which was announced a few days ago, was offered for sale in London on January 25, at Sotheby's. When the auctioneer took his seat the historic room was crowded to excess with collectors, literary men and booksellers. Around the table all the greatest book-traying agents of the United States were represented, and the sale was certainly the most important ever 'held in the room. The highest bid offered was £4900, which fell short of the reserve (£5000). At the reserve it "^as sold privately to an American gentleman on March 29. The MSS. was written 'by a scrivenoti or amanuensis.
