At the inquiry into the Arkmac disasters) Captain Butcher stated that he oould only attribute the disaster to some phenomenal current having affected the vessel while aha was steering westward, setting her on to the end of Break Sea Spit. He admitted tha* the officer on the bridge should have eeea the Spit earlier than he did.
