SCOTTISH SOCIETY.

4 CONCERT AT LYTTELTON. Last night a concert of Scottish music was given in the Oddfellows' Hall, Lyttelton, to celebrate the 145 th anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns, and also in connection with the third anniversary of that section, of lhe Scottish Society of New Zealand which has its headquarters in Lyttelton. Th© performers were members of the t_hristchurch branch of the Society, and most of them marched from the railway station to the hall to the strains of bagpipe and drum while Mr -Mac Lean Dun officiated as drum-major. There was a large attendance at the hall, and the chief, Mr G. Laurenson, M.H.R., presided, supported by Mr A. Macpherson, -chief of the Christchurch branch, and ,by chieftain Gemmell. i The programime was exceedingly well ! rendered, and had encores not been for- ; 'bidden, most of the numbers would probably have been redemanded. The vocalists in the first part were Mesdajmes R. Macdonald and J. Morgan, Miss Alice M'Gregor, and Messrs Millar Fraser and R. Macdonald. Miss Ida Fraser danced the sword dance, Master Alister Macpherson, the young son of thY Christchurcli chief, a Highland fling, and Misses I. Eraser and L. Macfarlane, and Masters A. Macpherson and Athol Morrison a reel. After an interval, prizes and collections of the works of Scottish authors, offered by the Society in Lyttelton for Scottish history, were presented to the winners by Mrs Gemmell. That allocated to the Lyttelton District High' School was awarded to Miss A. Morgan, that for the West Lyttelton School to. Miss Myrtle .'Harris, and that for Heathcote Valley School to Miss Elsie Wilkinson. 1 A medal presented by Mr Thomas Coupar for a Scottish literature paper, was awarded to Miss Tillie Boyd, of the Lyttelton District High School. A medal given by the same donor to be competed for by pupils of the West Lyttelton School had not produced any competition. The second part of the programme comprised the music of "Rob Roy," very effectively rendered, -under the direction of Mr 'Millar Fraser. The leading . vocal parts were taken by Mesdames Macdonald and Morgan, and Messrs Millar Fraser, Hunter, Hugh Morrison, J. MacLean, M'Kay and MTntosh. The choruses were well sung by members of the choir of tho Christchurch 'branch. A seann triubhas was gracefully dadoed by Miss Nellie Shepherd, and the "Reel o' Tultoch," followed by "Auld Lang Syne" and the National Anthem concluded the programme. The pipe music was admirably played by PipeMajor D' M. M'Kenzie and Piper Walker. Miss M'Carthy was pianist, and good service was rendered by an orchestra under Mfc Riordan. »
