Thursday. Tho fact that itho New Z&aland Cup candidates Roseal and Straihavon were worked at Yaldhurst this morning robbed the work of much interest. The tracks were, fast, and all the work was done on the plough. Cutts w&3 the first to commence, by despatching Treadmill for « fast mile and a quarter gallop, Windwhisble assisting him over the last seven furlongs. The times registered for the various stages of the gallop were:— First two furlongs, 26£ sec; six furlongs, lmin 18sec; and the full distance, 2min 12sec. Treadmill finished in a pleasing manner, and as he was carrying a. solid weight, the gallop was a good one. Cannie duel, looking the picture of health, galloped Beven furlongs in lmin 32sec, and Qu'arryman and Ordnance, separately, accomplished' half-pace work over iwo circuits. Shrapnel, Ringman and Heroism, cantered once round, and then , traversed : . a mile and a quarter at a working 'pace in 2min 23sec, the last half-mile occupying 63Jsec, the three finishing together. Shrapnel, wno was favoured with the inside running, moved resolutely, and appeared anxious 10 imT prove- the pace. Canteen, with a. light-weight up, 'trotted down, to the mile-*nd-&-half mark and set out at a strong pace. On reaching the milepost he was joined' by Juniper, and the pair raced together until approaching the winningpost, when Canteen came away, finishing several lengths in front of his companion, who probably could have gone faster had his rider persevered. The last round occupied 2min 26Jsec, the la3t mile and a quarter 2min 16seo^ and the full distance was covered in 2min 4245e0. Canteen finished in a manner that pleased the track-watchers. Madrigal and Comfort accomplished a working gallop over a mile, the last seven furlongs occupying lmin ] 39sec. Idea, Menura, Bandmaster and Provost Marshal were associated in a similar task, which occupied lmin 48£ sec, the four finish- j ing together. Brave Heart defeated Raga- j brash and Aherlow over six furlongs, run in lmin 20sec, while Pallas, who was not out on a time-making mission, traversed •& mile find a quarter in 2min 25sec. Secret Society fiaished fast over tho last part of a mediumpace circuit, and Firebrand was batter than Stepdancer and Narcissus in a gallop over a mile, which was run in lmin 43Jsec. Stepdancer, however, was left several lengths at the start, and finished close up. Gladsome defeated Leonore and Roscommon over a mile, run. in lmin 45iaec — a fair performance, and Nell Gwyn brushed over four furlongs easily in 51sec from a racing start. Hinetaura. and Gold Seal, separately, compassed two circuits at half-speed They, are looking in fine fettle, and Hinetaura moved freely. Huku j brushed over the last part of two steady ciri cuits, while Tho Mohican, galloped six fur- : longs in lmin ISsec from almost a. standing ! start — a good performance. Zealous and King Stork, who had an advantagg'in weight, easily defeated Creusot over a mile and a half, run in 2min 49scc. The last-named, however, was not persevered with. Chainguard spurted half a mile, and Catherine Gordon and' Reliance traversed two steady circuits, finishing. 1 fast over the last half-mile of each round. Bayonet defeated Nautiloid over cix furlongs in lmin 20sec, and Lavalette compassed a circuit at three-quarter specd 1 . Lolah brushed over hjilf a, mile in Sljsec with comparative eaEe, and Rockleigh finished in front of Wonderful and Loch Tay over a similar distance, run in 51sec. The last-named, however, was eased up towards the finieh. Prince Loris and the Nirvana fi!!y brushed' over half a mile, and Purdey's task was a couple of steady circuits. During the breakfast interval a drizzling rain set in, but soon ceaaed, and was not sufficient to benefit the tracks. M'Ginness'9 team, including Pampero, Bombardo, Sychem, Ailsa and Crown Imperial, were out and were given steady pacing. They are all looking well. fk-*--p upon nine o'clock the two-year-olds made •■'v<:t appearance. The first out were Stronghold, .'Signalman and King's Guest. The three, getting away smartly, came on together for three furlongs, when the two first-Earned, coming away, fought out a good finish; which ended in favour of Stronghold by a narrow margin. The timo I registered' was SOJsec. Silkworm, Golden Lily 'and Malakoff gat well away from the barrier and raced for a couple of furlongs, when they were cased off, coming on to the post at threeqttarter speed. Savoury and Lady Lyonora brushed over helf a mile, finishing together, while Master Alix finished in front of Zetland, Forest Ranger, Paroro and Zeochino over a strongly-run four furlonss, which occupied 51|sec. Tessera defeated 'Chryseis and Eti ; , terpo over half a. mile, and Antigone was better than Merrymaker at the end of a fas' five furlongs, run in lmin 6 l-ssec. ov tht plousrh. The following horses wero re3r>onKible for sound pacing: — Orcan, P.ayfair, Rosiphela, Ropu and Apremete. Keiburn was again an absentee. The racehorses Float, M'elodeon and Abergeldie arrived at Lyttelton from Wellington by the =.s. M-*rnr-oa this morning, to fulfil their respective engagements at the Canterbury Jockey Club's Spring Meeting.
