(Received October 29, 10.35 a.m.) SYDNEY, October 29. The " Sydney Morning Herald" -says that Mr Chamberlain's speech, seems to have been one long appeal to the working man for support. As to any conflict between trade unionism and free trade it can only b.e pointed out that the British ■workman has never been so well off in his life aif-he i» to-day. Traversing Mr Chamberlain's 1 claims in favour of protection, the "Herald" s&?& that since the Empire iwiouio: come first in our regard, it annist be : recognised that whatever tends to weaken *rja purcnaMng power of the millions of the OW Country will prejudice the sale of colonial produce. Placing a duty on. wheait and aneat for our benefit will, if the iuraener does not win his way in Britain, tendw-to raise -onces here end enhance the coso ol liviijp.
