CHARGES AND COUNTER CHARGER
INTERNATIONAL LAW POINTS
The differences between the captain and crew of the American ship Emily Reed, which put into Lyttelton in distress on July 12, camo before the Lyttelton Police Court his morning, when nine members of the crew appeared on remand to answer a charge of disobeying orders, and Captain Baker, the master of the vessel, appeared to answer chairges of assault preferred against him by five of the men.
The Mayor, Mr W. Radcliffe, was on the Bench*
Mr Dougall appeared for Captain Baker, and Mr Beswick for the men.
Mr, Frank Graham, consular agent for the United States, was present.
The crowded state of the space allotted to spectators showed that the public took a good deal of interest in the case.
James Benzie 8 Joseph Goodier, Alexander Sinclaiir, John Lester, John Griffiths, Laurence O'Brien, Charles Nelson, John Joseph Lamport and Patrick O'Briep, seamen on the Emily Reed, pleaded not gftilty to a charge of continued refusal .to obey lawful commands between July 12 and 22.
Captain G. A. Baker was charged, on information, with having committed assaults, when upon tlie high seas on Alexander Sinclair, on June 28, on Laurence O'Brien, on July 3, and on John Joseph Lamport, Joseph Goodier and Patrick O'Brien, on July 5.
