The 8.5. Wakatu left for aWoi at 9.30 a.m. to-day. - TWe s.s. Cygnffc -went on, the Harbour Board's -slip this incoming for an overhaul. The Antarctic relief ahip Morning went into dock to-day. V The "Wellington "Post" states that Mr Williams, formerly purser of the Takapuna, is now on the Rvtwiti, Mr Minn'ett, of tlhe latter boat, having joined the Takapuna. A Home paper states that M. Georges Barbey,' a well-known' Swiss engineer, >oTaim9 to have invented a ship motor, enabling vessels employing it ■almost to double iiheir epeed. The cost of the motor is abouf half of the present steam machinery, which the inventor predicts it will finally supersede. M. Barbey lhas refused en offer of £10,000 for 'the plans of ihe ship motor. He sttates that the Brifcifih Admiralty are in communication with him with a view of acquiring the invention. M. -Barbey, who has taken out many useful patents, both at Home and abroad, has had a chequered caroer, stalling «« a bootblack in America «nd working his way up to bis present influential position.
