The Paris " Autovelo " reports an instance of a motor car being stopped by at ■ fly in the department of the Maine. TlTie motor worked very well in the first paxb of the- journey, but began .to fail towards the end, and at last stopped altogether. After a number of fruitless attempts to, ascertain the cause, the driver discovered a dead fly in the tube connecting the reservoir with the carburettor. The insect had completely choked the tube, and etop- , ped the supply of oil to the motor. Some time ago considerable interest was taken in a new pneumatic spraying machine for painting, especially as the exhibition buildings at the Chicago World's Fair were coated with paint by this means. . This ! pneumatic painting haa lately developed considerably, and has in many cases proved itself a cheap, speedy and efficient substi- . tute for the brush. The application of the [ machine is wide, but has found its chief use in warehouses, factories and for painting largo surfaces of any kind 1 , whether they be' rough or smooth. [ The deepest lake in the British islands has been discovered^ thanks to |3ir> John - Murray, whose survey of the freshrwater '. Scottish lochs is now being prepared at Edinburgh. The honour belongs to Loch Morer, in Inverness-shire,, with a depth of 1009 ft — -several hundred 1 feet more than any previously recorded depth. , The survey shows some surprising results. Eighteen lochs gave soundings of 200 ft, nine gave ■ 300fb, five gave 400 ft and two over 500 ft. r The fruit brick is the latest form of pre- [ serve. It is rectangular or disc-shaped and * done up in oiled tissue paper. The consist- • ency is that of a small gumdrop, and, being composed largely of sugar, the flavour of I the fruit is retained admirably. These bricks wiUeoon be on the market. .
