MR CHAMBERLAIN'S PROPOSAL,

A FEDERAL MINISTER'S MESSAGE

IRISH OPPOSITION,

United Press Association — By Mecbrio Telegraph — Copyright. (Received June 5, 8.57 a.m.)

LONDON, June 4,

The " Times " declares that Mr Deakin's cablegram to the " British Australasian " is the most comprehensive and authoritative statement yet received regarding Australian sympathy with Mr Chamberlain's proposals. Leading men in Australia appear to n«ive grasped the central idea of the proposals more fully than many of his countrymen at Home, perhaps because they are more in earnest over the consolidation of the Empire. The majority in Britain earnestly, desire consolidation, but sentiment alone will not give an enduring basis. Mr T. W. Russell, M.P., speaking at Belfast, said that Mr Chamberlain was inflating a balloon for a no distant election. His proposals meant ruin for the country, beggary for the people, and the Government was daily staggering towards dissolution.
