The one topic in everybody's mouth just now is the great railway strike, and quite naturally so, for it is almost impossible to conceive of any strike which could so quickly and so intimately affect nearly every 'member of the community. The extreme suddenness with which the blow fell has,,- of course, made it all the more paralysing, for the .present, at any rate. The railway employees gave only twelve hours' notice of their intention to go out, and one would almost' think' that some subtle telepathic process ntiust have carried the news to the remoter subuibs, for quite early in the afternoon the town[ was thronged, and resembled nothing so much as a hive of disturbed and angry bees. Hundreds of women were taking a long and sad farewell of the Collins Street and Bourke Street shops, for travelling by the sparse suburban trains must necessarily be confined for a' time to those who are obliged to get into town and are outside the tramway radius. While the opinions One hears expressed on all sides as to this unhappy quarrel are pretty direct and explicit, yet it is open to us all to pity the unfortunate public, which occupies the unenviable position of being between the hammer and the anvil, and to hope for the time when we shall follow the reasonable and civilised example of other countries in making such warfare a legal impossibility. Meanwhile, , the strike is an actual fact, and how farreaching it may be in its effects no one can say. Tbe prices of food fuel have risen, and may possibly continue to do so. Many men employed in different trades are • temporarily out of work-, and one pities the poor wives and children, who, after all, suffer .most at these times. • Some up-coun-try towns ,and villages seem already to feel the want of stores, and of course mail and newspaper carriage . is I. partially disorganised in country districts. Still; the Government is getting plenty, of applications from men who are ready and willing to be taken' on, and a fair proportion appears to be of a class which make useful workers, so that we may hope that the present stagnation will not last very long. Suburban citizens seem to be making the best of a bad job and resigning themselves to travel in small steamers, ride on bicycles, and even bump in furniture vans when necessary.
