LYTTELTON.

The annual meeting of the Lyttelton Licensing Committee was held at th-e Magistrate's Courthouse, Lyttelton, at noon today; present— -Mr W. It. Haselden, S.M. (chairman), Messrs W. H. R. Dale, S. J. Monck, S. W. Mitchell, J. M. Douglass and Captain Willis. Tho police report stated that the majority of the sixteen: licensed houses in the district were fairly conducted, and the others well conducted. The premises were in good order and condition. The 'license of the •Albion Hotel, Lyttelton, was transferred from G. Pearce to J. B. Hill, on the application of Mr Cassidy. An accommodation license was "renewed to Silas Knight, Teddington. The chairman announced that all renewals applied for would be granted, except in the cases of tho Lyttelton and Heathcote Hotels, which would be dealt with separately- •-' » The following licenses wero renewed : F>. Mullin, Wharf Hotel, Woolston; T. Clark, Cave Rock Hotel, Sumner j G. Blalcher, Royal Hotel, Lyttelton ; C. Brown, Canterbury Hotel, Lyttelton ; T. G. (Fox,, Marine Hotel, Sumner ; C. W. Hammond, Heathcote Arms Hotel ; E. J. Brownie, Ocean View Hotel, Governor's Bay. The hour of closing and extinguishing lamps wa.s fixed, as at present, at 11 o'clock at Lyttelton and 10 o'clock at Sumner. In reference to tho Lyttelton Hdtel, the chairman said the committee thought some amendment was required. Mr Cassidy appeared for the applicant, Mary O'Brien. Constable Esson deposed that the Lyttelton Hotel was frequented by liremen, who were sometimes disposed to be rowdy. The licensee did her best to restrain them, and there, had been an improvement in the manner in which it was conducted. Sergeant llutledgo stated that in the last few 'months there had been a 50 per cent improvement in tho conduct of the house. In reference to the Heathcote Valley Hotel, Mr Cassidy appeared for the applicant, A. Johnston. Constable Hobson deposed that he had frequently visited the hotel on Sundays, found everything closed, and no signs of illicit trading. The police were always promptly admitted. The chairman said that the committee had heard complaints against tho two houses, ancl wished to be satisfied as to them. They wero now satisfied, and the renewals would be granted. A wholesale license to G. C. Smith and the packet license of the s.s. Cygnet were renewed. This was all the business.
