DAILY NOTES.

/The first meeting to disTHfi cuss the proposals of tkamwat ' tho Christohurch Tramway troposals. Board will be held this evening. Judging front the amount of correspondence which, has appeared in the newspapers, during the past month or two, there is -likely to be a large attendance, and the proposals will probably be canvassed with not a little warmth. For our part, we hope that our prediction will be fulfilled in both respects. Although we believe that the proposals of the Board are tue best that it is possible to conceive under the circumstances, we are none tho less satisfied that no harm can result from debating them fully. There is nothing like a free discussion to build up a unanimous pui-ao opinion, and although, in the case' of ••the tramway proposals, absolute unanimity is too much to expect, the meetings, of which to-night'B is the first, can hardly fail to consolidate the views of the community to a very large extent. * The movement which has paster foot- been inaugurated in Sydney fiAiiti. with the object of making Ilugby football a more attractive game from a (spectacular point of view will command) a great deal of Sympathy in this colony. To tho footballer j himself, the game as it is played at the present may be a satisfactory means of obtaining plenty of exercise and a certain, amount of that healthy excitement which all vigorous pastimes are wont to furnish. But, to the spectator, especially if he be not versed in the finer points of the game, it leaves something to be desired. Tiie on« looker would prefer toi^see fewer "scrums" and more fast, open work than he usually eees now } in fact, a game abounding in incident, tlis wishes are likely to be gratified all too seldom so long as the existing style of play continues. The Ohrisfcchurcb. Do* THE domain main Board being a little faiths. more impecunious than ■ usual just now, has determined to apply to the City Council for assistance*. : We hope that its request will be granted.' By this we do not mean to infer that tho Domain Board ought to be set temporarily on 'its legs and allowed to steer its unsteady course until the next financial obstacle landß it on4ts book agahj. That would only be to prolong its djjmg agony, when it would, perhaps, be kinder to put it out of its misery altogether. But the Domain paths are out of repair. They need r«*graveiling, and need it badly.. For this reason we hope the City Council will come to the rescue. If the Council declines, then it deserves to^jet its feet wet and catch a bad cold 1 when, next it vimts the Domain. Our readers do not need THJB JfcRiNCE of to be reminded tbafc the wales. Prinoe of Wales, whose birthday we celebrate to-morrow/ was not born heir the British Throne. Seventeen. 1 month* previously; Queen Aieatawica*. 1

then Princess of Wales, gave birth to a son, who, if he were alive now, would be tlie Prince of Wales, and the next in order of succession to the Crown. But the eldest son, the Duke of Clarence, died in 1892, and by his death removed tho only obstacle lying between his younger brother and the Throne. For a member of the Royal Family the Prince of Wales has travelled a great deal. As naval cadeta, he and Prince Edward journeyed' to the Mediterranean and the West Indies, and as midshipmen they visited Australia, the Cape, China, Singapore and Palestine. The elder brother then left the Navy, but the younger remained in the service, 'and as a sub-lieutenant, served on the North American station. The latter was still a commander when he became heir-apparent. Since leaving the Navy he has visited Australia, Now Zealand, Canada and India.
