MINING NOTES

The work of putting tanks on the pontoons of tho First Chance dredge has been completed, and, if the rivor coutinues to fall, operations will probably be resumed next week. The Hartley and Riley dredge is working steadily, and has a good stretch of umvorked ground before her. The Junction Electric No. 2 dredge started work on .Monday, and will be some time opening out. Mr R. M'Nab, M.H.R., has issued a short and interesting summary of the results achieved by "dredges in the Southland district last year. It shows that the dredges on the Waimumu field, seven in number, won gold valued at £20,852, and paid dividends amounting to £9249. The corresponding returns for the other fields were :— AVaikaka, eleven dredges, sold won £26,20-2, dividends .£1:262 ; Charlton, six dredges, gold won £10,374, dividends £3500; out-lying dredges, three iv. number, gold won £11.131, dividends £8:27. The tot-al amount of goicl won in the district was valued at £63,550, and the total amount paid in dividends was £17,838. Tho most successful single dredge was Sheddan's Freehold, situated in the \Yaikaka district, which obtained gold valued at £6399, and the best dividend payer was ihe Charlton Creek, whose shareholders received £3500, or lis per share.
