Association football opened at Christchurch this morning, when Wellington met Otago in a match at 1 Lancaster Park. The contest was not of a very interesting character, the "Wellington team, being by far the weaker combination, and the play in conr sequence centred round their goal posts throughout.. The Wellington., fortunately for themselves, were defended by -an excellent goal-keeper, whose play was mainly responsible for the defeat pf successive attempts at goal on the part of their welli disciplined opponents: In. the first spell Otago won toe toss, and immediately assuming the aggressive, finished with four goals to their credit, (Chadwick one, G. M'Millan one and J. M'Millan two), against Wellington's -nil. In. the second spell Wellington livened up a little, but their lack of condition and organisation was apparent, and any inyaaion on their part was promptly repelledC The spell finished with two more goals being added to Ot_go_ score, (GK M'Millan one, and Dobson one), lear- , '_? Otago victorious by six goals to nil.
