— — « i One man who came back from the Discovery by the Morning, John Walker.A.B., was. paid eff this morning,, and was shipped on board the s.s. Paparoa as an A.B. The forenoon «f to-day was spgnt- in cleaning, up on the Morning, and getting the vessel into good order before a portion of her crew goes on leave. Silver medals, about the size of a florin, wcro given as prizes in sports held by ths crew of the Discovery, on Nov. 8 last, in honour of the birthday of King Edward VII. They bore on tlie obverse the figure of a- penguin -standing on an ice-floe-, the words "Discovery Antarctic Expedition," ard the year of the departure of the vessel, 1901. Tlie names of the winners are to bs inscribed on the reverse. It is stated that the French-made stoves supplied for heating the quarters of the Discovery's company did not act successfully. They wctb supposed to supply a maximum of heat from a minimum of fuel, but they •did not fulfil their purpose. The backs were taken off, and' • they answered for.- ? what better until the strong gales of the j Antarctic, by preventing the escape of the smoke from the chimneys, filled tlie men's quarters with smoke, and compelled their disuse. ,
