THE MORNING.
♦ -^ iPORT LYTTELTON, MARCH 25. (For the " Star.") The wharves are thronged with «. hurrying crowd As a stately liner strolls in from sea, Siren and whistle call aloud And rainbow bunting is flaunting free ; But 'tis not for the mail boat the colours fly, That- wires click and that hearts beat high. John Bull's pet playthings are in -ilie bay, Polished and. powerful, stern and grim, "Whilst against the wharves in a long array Lie tramp and windjammer, slack or trim; But 'tis to welcome a smaller boat That the cannon roars from ita smoking throat. She lias made her number at break of day In her namesake Dawn from the East and South, And as she tows slowly into the bay Her news is asked for by every mouth, As she passes Iho Flagship a flash, and hark To the ihund'riug roar that salutes -the barque. Small \and stump ended, bluff-bowed and squat, She is manned by a. British bull-dog; crew, She conies not froirl battle and hostile shot, But from "doing 'the thing she was told to do," Anc) ilic ring- of pride froDi each flag ancJ gun Is for perils conquered and duty done.
