Replying to on address from Birmingham and Midland men settled) in South Af* rica, Mr Chamberlain, eulogised Birmingham's Imperial spirit, Which was animated by an appreciation: of wider patriotism involved in membership of the Empire. He had considwable difference with Hit John Bright on the colonial policy, and Birmingham left Mr Gladstone because it feared that hia policy would ruin the Empire.
